Legendary drag star Lady Bunny is teaming up with actor Neil Patrick Harris to revive the “Wigstock” drag festival on September 1.
The original festival, which debuted in 1984 in Tompkins Square Park, ended in 2001 after two years of rain squandered ticket sales and kept fans at home. But this year, the festival has found a new home on Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport and has some of drags top performers hitting the stage.
Harris, who was a fan of the festival, was encouraged by his husband, David Burtka, to reach out to Bunny to resurrect the event in light of the resurgence of drag in the advent of RuPaul’s Drag Race. After announcing the news in the NY Times this week, Harris teased that he might also join this year’s performers on stage in drag.
The featured lineup includes: Alaska, Alex Newell, Amanda Lepore, Barbara Tucker, Basil, Bianca Del Rio, Bob the Drag Queen, Candis Cayne, Charlene Incarnate, Darnelle XV, Desmond Is Amazing, Dina Martina, Dita Von Teese, Heklina, Jackie Beat, Jada Valenciaga, Jinkx Monsoon, Joey Arias, Justin Vivian Bond, Kevin Aviance, Latrice Royale, Lina Bradford, Linda Simpson, Lypsinka, Murray Hill, Peaches Christ, Peppermint, Raven O, Sherry Vine, Taylor Mac, Varla Jean Merman and Willam.
