Laganja Estranja teamed up with rapper J. Tyler for her latest music video, “Look At Me,” the debut single off her new album, “Exhibit A.”
“Look At Me”—directed by Assaad Yacoub (who also directed Aja’s “I Don’t Wanna Brag” and Monét X Change’s “Soak It Up” videos)—opens with Estranja’s Latino boyfriend, played by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr., getting arrested for possession of marijuana. The video then follows Estranja into a courtroom where she begins rapping after the bailiff calls for evidence in the case against her boyfriend.
After eight outfit changes (if you count the first two before Estranja’s hip hop banger starts playing), several bars from J. Tyler, and a perfectly executed death drop, Estranja’s signature dance move, the video closes with the judge ruling her guilty verdict.
Before the credits roll, the video highlights several important facts about the war on drugs, including the disproportionate amount of minorities who are imprisoned for possession of marijuana.
Estranja, who is a cannabis rights activist, dedicated the new video “to all individuals and families affected by the war on drugs, especially those disproportionately affected because of racial oppression.”
“Look At Me” will be made available for download on September 3 on iTunes.
